Amber walked in a huff, ignoring the pain in her ankle from taking control mid-stride. "You seem upset," George stated from a window. Amber just shot him a glare and picked up speed. "He had to be told sooner or later," George continued, popping up from window to window. He kept trying to get her attention as she darted into the library.

Amber headed to the bookshelves and breathed a sigh of relief that there was nothing reflective in their midst. All that looked back at her were the spines of books. She pulled one down and opened it, attempting to read it there. Another person pushed past and Amber realized she had to sit down or be in people's way. She headed to an end of the library far away from the windows and sat, cracking open the book.

"You can't ignore me forever," George spoke from the musty reflection in the metal table leg.

"Shut up," Amber whispered. A few people looked over at her before returning to their respective books.

"Told ya." George seemed quite proud of himself.

"Just leave me alone," Amber snapped at him.

Shut up! came a few thoughts into her mind, the telepaths trying to read.

"You shut up!" George yelled in response. "Find somebody else's mind to enter!"

Amber snapped the book shut and sped out of the library. She entered the bathroom with such force that she was sure the door would fly off its hinges. "Are you insane?" she yelled at the mirror. "What is it with you?"

"What is it with me? What is it with you? You're so huffy," Geogre shot back.

"You told him. Why did you tell him?"

"He needed to know."

Amber felt like punching him, but knew she'd only be hitting a mirror. "He isn't going to be friends with me anymore."

"You're just overreacting."

"He's straight, George. Just because he sees me for me does not mean that he can get past the fact that I'm..."

"A guy?"

Amber growled. "Incomplete. I just-- You know how hard it is for me to even find friends."

"It was easy for me."

Amber slapped the mirror. "But it isn't for me!" her voice cracked as she nearly screamed.

"Uh, Adrian, crowd."

Amber's face froze as she saw that, indeed, there were many other figures in the mirror. She turned to see a few people standing there, some who looked away immediately, a few who snickered. A couple looked quite scared. "Uh, um..." Amber tried to think of something to say, but nothing came out. She was halfway to her room when she realized that she'd run out the door and away from the throng. When she got there, she slammed the door and threw herself on the bed, hoping she'd only dreamt that.

Vince couldn't sleep that night. He kept replaying the scene over and over in his mind. Mental statistics, possibility of a connection, would telling her about his own crush be met with open ears, or would she think he was being courteous? Chattering voices in his head. It had been 23.5 hours since his last pill. Take another in a half an hour, worry about his lack of sleep later. He put his head in his hands. He just couldn't figure out what to do. His eyelids felt heavier than he'd ever felt, and he finally fell asleep.

When he woke, his head was screaming at him. He looked at the clock. Two hours sleep, but he couldn't stay asleep. Lifting off the bed, he shuffled over to the bathroom. He popped the pill in his mouth and swallowed with some water. At least an hour before it would work. Until then, the voices would have their way. He started to brush his teeth.

What was the percentage of the student body that would think he was gay for liking Amber? Did he care? Already 38% thought they were an item. It wouldn't change all that much. He spat out his toothpaste and looked at his watch. Five minutes to brush and process at the same time, at least 55 more minutes for him to stew. The voices roared.
Originally posted on the Pride High [link] message boards. The full title is The Broken #6: Developing a Sense of Self Part 2: Meddling Chapter 1: Aftermath. It was posted to the message boards on June 14, 2008. I want to turn it into a comic, so anybody willing to help would be appreciated. I am fine with any art style, as well as people doing just portions of it, and only certain stages (ie: someone who would ink so long as a penciller provides the basis).

The main characters are: Split [link] and Protean [link] . Split and Protean are owned by me, though the Pride High concept is not.
