Amber shuffled through the lunch line. She felt a sense of rejection. It was odd. George was the one who had tried out for the squad, not her. Besides, it would have been too much trouble to keep certain things secret if she did get on a squad. Still, she felt like a wasted talent, and she felt she was holding George back. She plopped a pizza and some milk on her tray and headed off. Quicker than she could react, a leg hooked hers, throwing her to the ground.

"Aww man," she muttered, seeing her pizza lying splattered on the ground.

"Watcha gonna do?" asked one of the Argonaut twins, standing over her.

Amber said nothing and instead chose to not even look at him. Instead, she reached for her milk, whose carton was unblemished. The second she picked it up, the same twin swatted it out of her hand and the other stepped on it. Shrugging, Amber pushed herself up.

"You're gonna take that?" George screamed, reflected in a metal table leg. "Geeze, what happened to the sissy with a short fuse?"

"Shut up," Amber whispered.

"What did you," one twin started.

"Say to us?" the other finished.

"N-nothing," Amber stammered.

"Oh, I heard something," the twins traded off.

"Do something, you pansy!" George called to her.

Amber's head swum, but she still was having difficulty staying focused. George was trying to gain control but she kept fighting him off. She didn't know what he would do. A twin grabbed her and bore down on her.

"Repeat what you said," the two breathed.

Amber was jerked forward until she looked him right in the eyes. It hurt, and she lashed out. Her knee came up and smashed into the boy's crotch. He doubled back and dropped her at the same time. The other rushed at her, and Amber was sure one punch would leave her hospitalized for a long time. Her whole body began to throb.

The boy screamed and shuddered. He couldn't move forward. It was a scream of terrible pain, and Amber could see why. She could see his soul being wrenched from his body. It was fighting the process, but seemed to be slowly losing.

"Cas!" the other twin cried, running to him. "Oh god, what're you doing to him, you bitch?" He held onto his brother, trying to shake him out of it, as he tried to keep from doubling over from the pain that was being sent to him from their bond.

Amber couldn't stop it, though. She felt powerless and confused. What was happening? Somebody slammed into her from behind and she fell face first into the dirt. Cas's screaming stopped and she could just barely see him collapse completely.

"What was that?" asked Oblivious, sitting on her back.

"I-I don't know," Amber replied, feeling wetness on her chest. Her forms had burst.

"You're dead," Paul growled, advancing on Amber.

Dr. Doe was suddenly on the scene and stepped in between the boy and his target. "Don't do it, Paul," he said calmly.

Lightspot was there, as well. "Everybody, go!" he called, and Amber realized that they had all been watching. There was shuffling of feel, but it didn't sound like anybody was leaving. Lightspot sighed. "Get off her, Alex," he said, and Amber felt the weight leave her back.

Dr. Gunn helped her up, but she couldn't cover her chest in time. "What the hell?" Paul asked. Amber looked down at her now flat, soaked chest as she was gently led away, still noticing the prying eyes that bored into her, all the students that had ignored Lightspot's order to leave. She could hear Paul remark as she walked of, "She… she's a he?"

Amber was brought to the nurse's office, where she had been deemed healthy. Cas was also given a clean bill of health, and was back to his old self in time for the next class. She was questioned more fully by a counselor and administration found the need to change the marker on her records that indicated what powers she had.

"You could have killed him!" is what was yelled at her, and Amber sulked. She wished above all else that George would come and take over, deal with this mess, but he stayed put. Before she even returned to her room, she could tell that everyone knew about her, about both secrets she'd been trying to keep.

"Hi Amber," Vince said warily, walking into her room. "Your roommate let me in."

Amber couldn't bring herself to look at him. "Hey," she replied.

"Everything all right?" he asked, sitting down next to her.

Amber stared straight forward, her tear ducts refusing to well, even though she agonizingly wanted them to release. She wanted to say something, but what could she say? She had been building a good life at this school, a life that was torn down in one fell swoop, and all from something she didn't know she could do.

Vince put his arm around her shoulder. "Y'know, Amber, no matter what, you'll still be my friend."

Amber felt some solidarity and leaned into him, letting him hold her for a while.
Originally posted on the Pride High [link] message boards. The full title is The Broken #4: Developing a Sense of Self Part 1: Stealth Chapter 4: The End of the Ride. It was posted to the message boards on January 11, 2008. I want to turn it into a comic, so anybody willing to help would be appreciated. I am fine with any art style, as well as people doing just portions of it, and only certain stages (ie: someone who would ink so long as a penciller provides the basis).

The main characters are: Split [link] and Protean [link] . It also contains characters owned by other people: Smash and Crash [link] , Oblivious [link] , Dr. Doe [link] , and Lightspot [link] . Split and Protean are owned by me, though the Pride High concept is not.
